Dublin City Centre

Dublin's city centre straddles the River Liffey and combines a compact, walkable layout with a rich blend of medieval, Georgian and modern architecture. On the south side, Grafton Street offers pedestrianised shopping that leads to the green expanse of St Stephen's Green, while nearby Trinity College, founded in 1592, houses the celebrated Book of Kells and the atmospheric Long Room library. The Temple Bar district, with its cobbled lanes, lively pubs and independent galleries, sits between Dame Street and the river.

North of the Liffey, O'Connell Street is the city's grand main thoroughfare, anchored by the General Post Office, a key site of the 1916 Easter Rising, and marked by the soaring stainless steel Spire. Henry Street provides further shopping, and the elegant Custom House and Four Courts line the river quays. The Liffey itself is crossed by a string of historic bridges, including the cast-iron Ha'penny Bridge, a much-photographed Dublin landmark.

The centre also offers museums to suit most interests, from the National Museum of Ireland's archaeology collections on Kildare Street to EPIC, the Irish emigration museum at the CHQ building on the docklands. Throughout, traditional pubs serve as social hubs, often hosting live music sessions that capture the warmth and energy for which Dublin is known.
