Coleraine Museum

Coleraine Museum tells the story of the borough of Causeway Coast and Glens through a varied collection of artefacts, archive material and contemporary displays. Based in the heart of Coleraine, the museum draws on objects spanning prehistory to the present, including finds from the Mountsandel site on the banks of the River Bann, one of the earliest known settlements in Ireland dating back some 9,000 years.

Permanent and rotating exhibitions cover themes such as the plantation of Ulster, the textile and linen industries that shaped local towns, emigration to North America and everyday life on the north coast. Highlights include locally produced ceramics, costume, fine art and items related to the Honourable The Irish Society, which was granted lands in the area in the early 17th century. A small but well-curated collection of paintings features works by artists with strong connections to the region.

The museum runs an active programme of family activities, talks and temporary shows that respond to current research and community interests. Admission is free, and the central location makes it an easy stop when exploring the town before heading on to the dramatic Causeway Coast.
