Castlerock Beach

Castlerock Beach is a broad, sweeping stretch of sand on the north Atlantic coast of County Londonderry, in the village of Castlerock between the mouth of the River Bann and the cliffs of Downhill. Backed by dunes and the railway line that hugs this part of the coast, it forms part of the wider Causeway Coast and is a favourite with families, walkers, surfers and birdwatchers.

The sands run for around a mile and a half, giving plenty of room for kite flying, sandcastles and long shoreline walks. Conditions on the Atlantic swell make it a popular spot for surfing and bodyboarding, while the calmer end near the Bann estuary attracts paddlers and dog walkers. Lifeguard cover operates during the summer season and the beach has frequently held Blue Flag status for water quality and facilities.

Castlerock village sits immediately behind the beach, with a railway station on the Belfast to Derry/Londonderry line bringing visitors right to the dunes. To the east, a clifftop walk leads up to Mussenden Temple and the Downhill Demesne, while Portstewart, Portrush and the Giant's Causeway lie within easy reach along the coast.
