About Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otters Sanctuary, Buckfastleigh
Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otters Sanctuary is a purpose-built wildlife attraction located near Buckfastleigh, combining two distinct conservation and educational experiences. The Butterfly Farm section houses a large heated greenhouse filled with tropical plants and free-flying butterflies and moths from around the world, creating an immersive sensory experience as visitors walk through the humid, plant-filled environment. The butterflies represent numerous species in various lifecycle stages, and the setting allows for close observation and photography. A adjoining insectarium displays other invertebrates and provides educational information about butterfly ecology and metamorphosis.
The adjacent Dartmoor Otters Sanctuary is devoted to the conservation and care of the European otter, a species still relatively rare in the region despite being native to Devon. The facility features large naturalistic pools and woodland setting where visitors can observe rescued and breeding otters in conditions designed to replicate their natural riparian habitats. Feeding times and educational talks are scheduled throughout the day. The combination of both attractions makes the site particularly appealing to families with children, offering hands-on learning about natural history and conservation. The site also includes a gift shop and café, and the surrounding grounds allow for pleasant walks. For visitors interested in wildlife, biodiversity, and conservation education, Buckfast offers an accessible and enjoyable introduction to two distinctive English species.
