Lyn and Exmoor Museum

The Lyn and Exmoor Museum is housed in St Vincent's Cottage, a restored mid-16th-century dwelling on Market Street in the centre of Lynton. It is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the town and provides an atmospheric setting for a collection devoted to the social and natural history of Exmoor and the twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth.

Inside, displays trace the working lives of the people who shaped this corner of North Devon: hill farmers, lime burners, fishermen, quarrymen and the craftsmen who built the cliff railway and harbours. There are rooms set up as a Victorian kitchen and parlour, cabinets of domestic bygones, agricultural tools, model ships and material on the devastating Lynmouth flood of 1952. A geological section explains the dramatic landscape of cliffs, combes and waterfalls that surround the town.

Run largely by volunteers, the museum is compact but rewarding, and makes a good companion visit to a walk on the South West Coast Path or a ride on the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway just a short stroll away.
