About this attraction

About Buckfast Abbey, Buckfastleigh

Buckfast Abbey stands on a site of monastic settlement stretching back over a thousand years, though the present community and buildings largely date from the 19th and 20th centuries. The original monastery was founded in the 11th century and became one of Devon's most significant religious houses. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, the abbey fell into ruin for over three centuries. In 1882 a small group of Benedictine monks arrived and began the remarkable task of rebuilding the abbey using salvaged medieval stones and Victorian engineering. The modern Abbey Church, completed in 1932, is a striking exercise in Gothic Revival architecture with a soaring nave and impressive roof timbers.

Visitors to Buckfast Abbey today encounter a working monastic community alongside a major heritage and pilgrimage site. The extensive grounds include the rebuilt cloister, chapter house, and residential quarters, whilst the Church itself is open to the public. The abbey shop sells produce made by the monks, including the famous Buckfast mead, which has become a cultural touchstone in British popular culture. The wider estate offers peaceful walks through manicured gardens and abbey grounds, with views across the Dart Valley. The Abbey Visitor Centre provides interpretation and context for the site's long history. Buckfast Abbey remains an active place of worship and contemplation rather than a museum, offering visitors insight into contemporary monastic life and the continuities of religious settlement in medieval Devon.
