Axe Estuary Wetlands

The Axe Estuary Wetlands comprise a complex of saltmarsh, reedbeds, mudflats, and transitional habitats where the River Axe meets the sea. The estuary is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its biological importance, particularly for overwintering and passage wading birds, wildfowl, and rarer species. The wetlands represent a crucial stopover point on migration routes between northern breeding grounds and southern wintering sites.

Visitors can explore the estuary from multiple viewpoints and walking routes, observing diverse bird species throughout the year. Winter months bring large numbers of widgeon, teal, and pintail, whilst spring and autumn witness waves of passage migrants including redshank, greenshanks, and occasionally rarer species. The reedbeds support breeding reed warblers and water rails, and the open water attracts fishing cormorants and herons. The estuary is also botanically interesting, with specialist salt-marsh plants and rare ferns. Access is best from Seaton or Colyford, and the site is popular with photographers, naturalists, and those seeking quiet observation of coastal wildlife.
