Journey fact:

Though now largely forgotten, remnants of the tunnels still exist today.

Journey Overview

As the 76 bus rumbles away from Clacton Pier Avenue, the vibrant bustle of the seaside town fades into view. From the window, the famous Clacton Pier stretches proudly over the sparkling sea, its amusement rides and arcades gleaming in the sunlight. A scattering of gulls glides overhead, and the scent of salty sea air mingles with the waft of fish and chips from nearby vendors. Rows of pastel-colored shops line the street, their signs flashing with bright offers for beach-goers.

Heading through Clacton, the scenery shifts. You catch glimpses of Brook Retail Park, its sprawling car park filled with families loading shopping into their cars. Beyond, a mix of modern outlets and chain restaurants contrasts with Clacton’s older brick houses, offering a glimpse of the town’s evolving character. The road winds toward Clacton Highfield Holiday Park, where neatly arranged caravans sit in long rows, children darting between them in bursts of laughter. Trees line the perimeter, their green canopies creating a sense of calm as the bus continues onward.

The bus ventures to Little Clacton where the pace slows, whilst one bus an hour heads straight to Frating.

At Little Clacton, The Blacksmith Arms pub comes into view, its whitewashed walls and thatched roof evoking the charm of an old English village. A handful of locals gather outside under hanging flower baskets, enjoying an afternoon pint. Rolling fields and hedgerows stretch out on either side as the bus approaches Weeley.

In Weeley’s narrow streets, red-brick cottages and quaint shops create a picturesque scene. The Black Boy pub, with its rustic wooden beams and ivy-clad walls, stands as a reminder of the village’s history. Passing through, you notice clusters of homes and scattered fields before the bus merges onto a quieter road.

Frating brings a shift to more open countryside. Haggars Lane is bordered by farmland, with rows of crops and the occasional tractor visible in the distance. Elmstead Market follows, its quaint charm enhanced by Chapel Lane’s winding path, framed by cottages and trees.

As the bus nears Colchester, the imposing structure of the University of Essex rises, its modern buildings contrasting with the pastoral countryside left behind. Finally, Colchester’s historic streets and Roman heritage welcome you to a bustling urban hub, signalling the end of the scenic journey.

A Fab Day Out!

Start your day in Clacton-on-Sea, a classic British seaside town perfect for a morning stroll along the vibrant Clacton Pier. Kick things off by walking down the pier, where you can enjoy the sea breeze, panoramic views of the coastline, and maybe even try your hand at the arcade games. If you’re feeling adventurous, head to the pier’s rides or the indoor soft play and adventure golf for some family-friendly fun. Once you’ve soaked in the seaside atmosphere, grab a coffee and a hearty breakfast at one of the nearby cafes—Bluebird Tearooms is a charming option with great views.

After breakfast, hop on the 76 bus and head inland to Little Clacton. This quiet village offers a more relaxed pace. Stop by The Blacksmith Arms, a traditional country pub with a cozy atmosphere, where you can enjoy a mid-morning snack or a drink. If you’re visiting in summer, their garden is a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by.

Next, continue your journey to Weeley, a village with a rustic charm. Take a short walk along The Street, lined with quaint homes and greenery, and visit The Black Boy pub. It’s a great spot for lunch, offering classic pub fare in a historic setting. After lunch, if you’re up for a short walk, explore the surrounding countryside or visit the nearby Weeley Hall Wood, a peaceful woodland ideal for stretching your legs before heading back to the bus stop.

In the afternoon, make your way to Colchester, Britain’s oldest recorded town, rich in history and culture. Start your exploration at Colchester Castle, an impressive Norman keep surrounded by beautifully maintained parkland. Take a tour of the castle museum to learn about the town’s Roman heritage. Afterward, wander through Castle Park, where you can enjoy the well-tended gardens and perhaps stop for a snack at the café.

End your day with some shopping along Colchester High Street, or, if you prefer art and history, visit Firstsite, a contemporary art gallery with unique exhibitions. Finish off with dinner at one of Colchester’s many excellent restaurants before catching the 76 bus back, reflecting on a day well spent exploring the best of Essex.
