Huddersfield once operated Britain’s first municipally owned electric tramway in 1883, pioneering public control of urban transport. The system was so influential that American reformers visited to study it.
Journey Overview
This is a journey that cuts deep through the heart of West Yorkshire, with the bus leaving behind the hustle and bustle of Leeds City Centre, through the suburbs of Beeston Hill, with a mix of imposing flats, terraced and detached houses, then it’s into the undulating hills of the Pennines.
It’s down the ever so long Leeds Road for the 2B/2C and down to Dewsbury with the bus weaving its way close to the picturesque River Calder. The scenery is a fascinating mix of countryside and urban as the bus stops at Mirfield then goes through Battyeford. Mirfield offers perhaps the most eye-catching part of this enthralling journey and is a town famous for its 19th century St. Mary’s Chuch and Monastery and blissful surrounding countryside.
The 2B/2C continues down Leeds Road, but with the view from the window more urban and built up as Huddersfield approaches, though there’s still a rural setting on the landscape with the Dalton Nature Reserve just visible on the left hand side of the bus. There’s a real feel of the industrial heritage of this part of West Yorkshire, with the vast range of factories and offices on the route, testimony to the storied past of this fine region.
Huddersfield Town Football Club is on the horizon before the bus climbs upwards towards Huddersfield town centre, then down again into the Bus Station, right in the centre of this fab town with its eclectic mix of history, retail, entertainment and great places to eat.
A Fab Day Out!
Spend a couple of morning hours in Leeds starting with a stroll through the city centre as it wakes up. Wander around Briggate and the beautiful Victorian arcades, where independent shops and cafés begin to open. Head towards Leeds Art Gallery or the Henry Moore Institute for a quick cultural stop, both free and close together. Walk down to the waterfront at Granary Wharf to watch canal boats and commuters. Finish with breakfast or coffee in the Corn Exchange, enjoying the mix of historic architecture and relaxed morning atmosphere.
Onto the 2B or 2C to Mirfield and maybe a gentle walk along the Calder and Hebble Navigation, where narrowboats, towpaths, and waterside views create a peaceful atmosphere. Cross over to the River Calder for a change of scenery and views of the hills beyond. Wander through the town centre to spot local shops and cafés, ideal for a relaxed coffee break. If time allows, stroll towards the green spaces near Hopton or look out for historic buildings that reflect Mirfield’s industrial past blended with its quietly scenic setting.
Back on the bus to Dewsbury and maybe a visit to Dewsbury Minster, an impressive church with roots stretching back over a thousand years. Wander through the market area before getting back on-board to Huddersfield.
Alighting the bus at the Bus Station, the Piazza is worth perusing the independent shops and cafés. Take a short walk to Greenhead Park for fresh air and views of the surrounding hills. The canalside area also offers a calmer pace and glimpses of the town’s industrial heritage. For dinner, Apothicaire on Dunford Road is a great choice, serving creative, seasonal dishes in a relaxed setting, making it a satisfying way to end your visit.
