178 Chatham – Magpie Hall Road – Churchill Avenue – Luton (Circular)

The 178 is one of Nu-Venture's tidy Medway circulars, a route that turns what could be a routine local hop into a proper tour of Chatham's hillside neighbourhoods. Setting off from Stop A2 at Chatham Waterfront Bus Station, with the Medway flowing wide and grey beyond the terminus, the bus pulls away past Upbury Way and Newnham Street, threading the busy lower town before beginning its long, steady climb.

The first proper ascent takes the bus up to Luton, passing St Paul's Church, a landmark of red brick and Kentish ragstone that marks the boundary between the town centre and the residential terraces above. The streets here are tight and characterful, with corner shops, painted shopfronts and the sort of steep pavements that remind you Chatham is built on a series of chalk ridges.

Climbing higher, the route enters the White Road Estate, passing Glencoe Road, Shipwrights Avenue and The Victory Academy. The views open up on the right as the bus skirts Coney Banks, with glimpses across the rooftops towards the Medway valley and, on a clear day, the distant towers of the Historic Dockyard. Magpie Hall Road Top is the high point of this stretch, a windy corner that feels surprisingly rural after the bustle of the waterfront.

From here the 178 drops gently into Walderslade, past Snodhurst Bottom and Snodhurst Avenue, where the housing softens into mid-century semis and the green wedge of Capstone Country Park is never far off. Then comes the long Wayfield loop: Burma Way, Malta Avenue, Silverbank and the Churchill Clinic, before the bus works its way along Churchill Avenue itself, a quietly handsome residential road lined with mature trees.

After Street End Road and Mill Lane, the descent back into Luton begins in earnest. Past the Hen and Chickens, Upper Luton Road and Luton Junior School, the bus rejoins the main spine through Albany Road, Castle Road and Bank Street, with the shop parade busy with everyday Medway life. A final run down past Institute Road and Upbury Way returns the 178 to the Waterfront, closing the loop with the river back in view.
