156 Chatham – Rochester – Queen Mother Court – Borstal

The 156 is one of the most useful little circuits Nu-Venture runs across Medway, weaving a tight loop out of Chatham Waterfront Bus Station, climbing through Rochester's historic streets, looping the Queen Mother Court estate and dropping down to Borstal before returning along the river. It packs a surprising amount of variety into a single short ride.

Pulling out of Stop C14 at Chatham Waterfront, the bus sets off with the wide tidal Medway on one side and the bustle of Chatham High Street on the other. The first stops at Anchorage House and Hospital Lane mark the transition from Chatham's modern bus station into a more workaday stretch of the A2, with views across to the masts and cranes of the Historic Dockyard.

As the route enters Rochester proper, the skyline opens up. The Norman keep of Rochester Castle rises above the rooftops, and the cathedral's pale stone tower comes into view between the gables of the old town. The bus skirts Bath Hard Lane and Furrell's Road, passing close to the riverside before climbing inland through John Street and Watts Avenue, where rows of Victorian terraces line the hill.

Roebuck Road and St Margaret's Church mark the quieter, residential heart of Rochester. St Margaret's, with its squat medieval tower and leafy churchyard, is one of those parish churches that feels tucked away despite sitting close to the main road. From here the bus winds through Ridley Road and the cul-de-sacs around the Queen Mother Court, a modern sheltered housing development named for the late Queen Mother.

The descent into Borstal is the prettiest stretch. The road drops towards the Medway, with glimpses of the river and the wooded slopes beyond. Goddings Drive, Cookham Hill and Sunderland Close take the bus through a settled village-within-a-town, the kind of place where the river feels close enough to touch. Borstal itself gave its name to the former institution that once stood nearby, a piece of social history quietly embedded in the local map.

Climbing back out, the 156 returns through Shelley Rise, Applecross Close and Valetta Way, looping past Hathaway Court and Castle Hill. The final approach is the showpiece: the Guildhall Museum stop sits in the shadow of Rochester's timber-framed Guildhall, with the castle and cathedral framing the view. Past Rochester Railway Station and the Community Hub, the bus retraces its way along the river to Chatham, closing the loop where it began.

The 156 is short, but it drops you in exactly the right places for a properly rewarding day exploring Medway's historic core. Starting at Chatham Waterfront Bus Station means you can arrive easily by Southeastern train and walk over the road to Stop C14, ready to ride a loop that delivers castles, cathedrals, riverside walks and quiet residential streets in a single morning or afternoon.

Before boarding, it is worth a short stroll from Chatham Waterfront along the Medway to glimpse the masts of the Historic Dockyard in the distance. A coffee from one of the cafes near the bus station sets you up nicely. Hop on the 156 and ride the first few stops through Anchorage House and Hospital Lane, watching the high street give way to the older streets of Rochester.

The natural place to step off first is at the Guildhall Museum stop in the heart of Rochester. From here you are within a few minutes' walk of Rochester Castle, with its enormous Norman keep, and Rochester Cathedral, England's second-oldest cathedral founded in 604. The High Street itself is lined with Dickens-era shopfronts, antique dealers and tea rooms, with the Six Poor Travellers House and Eastgate House both worth seeking out.

Rejoin the 156 and ride out through John Street and Watts Avenue towards St Margaret's Church. This is a lovely place to break the journey if you enjoy quiet parish churches, with a leafy churchyard and views back over the rooftops to the cathedral. From here the bus winds round through Ridley Road and the Queen Mother Court loop.

Stay aboard for the descent into Borstal. Get off near Cookham Hill or Sunderland Close and walk down to the Medway riverside path. The views back across the river to the cathedral and castle from the Borstal bank are among the best in Medway, and the riverside Ship Inn is a long-standing local pub if you fancy a pause.

Catch the 156 back up the hill and ride round through Shelley Rise and Castle Hill into Rochester. Step off again at the Guildhall Museum or Rochester Railway Station stop for a late lunch on the High Street. Don Vincenzo and Topes are well-established Rochester dining spots, while Cafe Nucleus is a favourite for cake.

End the day with a riverside wander down to Rochester Pier, then catch the 156 the short distance back to Chatham Waterfront, where mainline trains take you onward. A small route, but a big day out.
