141 Earl Estate – Darnley Road – Strood – Rochester – Chatham

The 141 is one of those quietly useful Medway routes that strings together a hillside housing estate, a working high street, two historic riverside towns and Chatham's modern waterfront, all in a single round trip. It starts on the Earl Estate at the Bligh Way shops, where rows of pebble-dashed terraces look out over the upper Medway valley, and threads slowly through the estate roads, calling at Albatross Avenue, Scholars Rise, Fulmar Road, Columbine Road, Elaine Avenue and Maple Road Bottom before tipping downhill towards Strood.

The descent is the first proper scenic moment. The bus drops down to the Darnley Arch, a low Victorian railway bridge on the old Chatham main line, and emerges into Strood High Street. From the top deck you catch glimpses of the Medway widening below, with the masts of small craft moored along Canal Road and the rooftops of Rochester rising on the far bank. The route runs the length of the high street, past the Matalan and Morrisons stops that anchor everyday Strood, then slips down towards the river crossing.

Crossing the Medway bridges is the highlight. Rochester Castle's enormous square keep and the perpendicular west front of the cathedral fill the windows on the left, with the river and the railway viaduct curving away on the right. The bus pulls in at the Guildhall Museum stop on the High Street, in the heart of Dickens country, and continues past the Railway Station, the Community Hub, Star Hill and Jacksons Fields, climbing gently away from the river through streets of Georgian shopfronts and weatherboarded cottages.

From Star Hill the road dips again past St Bartholomew's Hospital and into Chatham, calling at the Railway Station's New Cut stand before turning down to Chatham Waterfront Bus Station. The view here is all redeveloped dockland, the Pentagon shopping centre, and the basin where the Medway broadens towards the Historic Dockyard. After a short layover the 141 retraces its path, giving you a second look at the cathedral, the castle and the river before climbing the hill back to the estate.

It is a short, frequent local service rather than a sightseeing tour, but the geography does the work for you: in well under an hour you pass from quiet residential streets to one of the most concentrated stretches of Norman and medieval architecture in the South East, and back again.
