About this attraction

About Ypres Tower

Ypres Tower is a substantial three-storey stone structure built in 1249 as a key defensive work within Rye's medieval fortifications. The tower takes its unusual name from the Flemish city of Ypres, possibly reflecting the origin of masons or builders involved in its construction during the era of cross-Channel cultural exchange. The tower sits at the highest point of Rye's Old Town, a commanding position that surveys the valleys and marshlands beyond and demonstrates the strategic importance of Rye as a Cinque Port settlement.

The tower served as a civic and military stronghold for centuries, and was subsequently used as a prison, a dwelling, and various other functions as Rye's role evolved from a maritime power to an inland market centre. Today it houses a small heritage museum operated by Rye Town Council, with displays exploring the town's medieval past, its role as a Cinque Port, the impact of smuggling, and the evolution of the surrounding landscape. The exhibits use a combination of artefacts, illustrations, and interpretive text to narrate Rye's fascinating journey from strategic fortress to heritage hotspot.

The tower's upper floors offer panoramic vistas across Romney Marsh towards the Kent coast, the inland hills, and the patchwork of fields and drainage channels that characterise the marshland landscape. Visitors ascend internal stairs through atmospheric interior spaces to reach the viewing platform. The tower remains a focal point in Rye's townscape and a symbolic representation of the town's medieval and maritime heritage.
