St Catherine’s Church in Cocking

St Catherine's Church sits in the small downland village of Cocking, tucked beneath the chalk ridge of the South Downs between Midhurst and Chichester. The church has Norman origins, with parts of the nave and chancel arch dating from the 12th century, and is a Grade I listed building that has served the surrounding farming community for more than 800 years.

Inside, the church preserves a remarkable medieval wall painting of the Nativity above the chancel arch, rediscovered during 19th century restoration. The simple flint and stone walls, narrow lancet windows and unpretentious furnishings give the interior an atmosphere of quiet age. The dedication to St Catherine of Alexandria is reflected in the small details of the building, and the churchyard contains weathered headstones and views out to the rising slopes of the Downs.

Cocking lies on the A286 between Midhurst and Chichester and is a popular stopping point for walkers on the South Downs Way, which crosses the road just to the south of the village. The church is usually open during daylight hours and makes a peaceful pause on any walk or drive through this corner of West Sussex.
