About West Somerset Railway
The West Somerset Railway is a living heritage railway that operates between Minehead and Bishops Lydeard, a distance of approximately 20 miles. Operating since 1976, it is the longest standard-gauge heritage railway in England, running vintage steam locomotives and carefully restored passenger coaches through some of the most picturesque countryside and coastal scenery in Somerset. The line follows much of the original route of the Great Western Railway's branch line, which closed to regular services in 1971.
Visitors can board at Minehead station and travel inland through Dunster, Blue Anchor, Watchet, and Williton, with views of Exmoor's rolling hills and the Bristol Channel. Many visitors enjoy a round trip, whilst others combine the railway with walking, fishing, or visiting attractions along the route. The railway operates year-round with varying schedules, featuring special seasonal services including Thomas the Tank Engine events and festive-themed trains. Each station along the line has its own character, with some hosting heritage activities and small museums. The experience captures the golden age of Victorian and Edwardian railway travel, making it a significant draw for families, rail enthusiasts, and tourists seeking a slice of nostalgia.
