Selworthy Green

Selworthy is a model estate village of striking visual harmony, built in the early 19th century as a planned settlement on the Holnicote Estate. The village centre features a broad grass green surrounded by whitewashed cottages of identical design, their uniform appearance creating an almost theatrical quality that has made Selworthy one of the most photographed villages in Somerset. The cottages were built to house estate workers and retired servants, and their careful arrangement reflects the Victorian vision of orderly, picturesque rural settlement.

The green itself sits at the heart of the hamlet, with mature trees and open views towards the surrounding moorland and wooded valleys. At the head of the green stands the Church of All Saints, also whitewashed, which reinforces the architectural unity of the settlement. The cottages feature decorative details like bargeboards and trim that add character while maintaining overall uniformity.
