Ullapool Museum

Ullapool Museum occupies the former Telford Parliamentary Church on West Argyle Street, a short walk uphill from the harbour. The museum is run as an independent charitable trust and tells the story of Ullapool, Loch Broom and the wider Lochbroom parish, from prehistoric and Gaelic-speaking communities through to the planned fishing village founded by the British Fisheries Society in 1788.

Displays cover crofting life, herring fishing, boatbuilding and the Highland Clearances, with particular attention to emigration. The passage of the ship Hector from Loch Broom to Nova Scotia in 1773, often described as the first organised emigration of Highland Scots to Canada, is a recurring thread, and the museum holds material connecting local families to descendants overseas.

Alongside the permanent exhibits are archive photographs, oral history recordings in English and Gaelic, natural history collections reflecting the sea lochs and mountains around Ullapool, and a small shop selling books on local history. The building itself is part of the visit: the plain white-harled church interior, with its tall windows and gallery, is a good example of Telford's austere Highland church design.
