About this attraction

About The Rows, Chester

The Rows are a distinctive feature of Chester's medieval street plan, particularly visible on Eastgate Street, Watergate Street, Bridge Street and Northgate Street. These are covered arcaded passages on two levels, with shops and offices at street level and a gallery above, creating sheltered shopping areas that have been continuously occupied for around 600 years. The ground-floor fronts were rebuilt in later periods, but the upper galleries retain their medieval character and structure.

Walking through the Rows you will pass independent shops, cafes and galleries arranged along these historic passages. The architecture itself is the main attraction, with leaded windows, timber framing and period stonework creating a very different retail experience from modern shopping centres. Each row has a distinct character and connects with other medieval streets, making exploration easy.

The Rows are free to walk through at any time and form the heart of Chester's shopping district. The architectural quality and continuity of use make them one of Europe's most striking examples of medieval urban renewal and adaptive reuse, and they are best explored on foot without a specific schedule.
