About Chester Roman Amphitheatre
Embedded in the corner of Chester's historic street layout near St John the Baptist Church, the Roman Amphitheatre is one of Britain's most significant archaeological sites. Built in the 1st century AD to serve the fortress of Deva Victrix, it could hold around 7,000 spectators for gladiatorial contests and public gatherings. Only the northern half has been excavated; the southern section lies buried beneath modern streets.
What visitors see today is a sunken arena with interpretive panels explaining the structure and its purpose. The site is complemented by a section of the fortress's red sandstone wall, visible just across the road, which helps convey the scale of the Roman military presence in Chester. The contrast between the open archaeological site and the surrounding medieval and Victorian streets makes the location particularly striking.
The amphitheatre is open and free to visit at any time. It works well as part of a walking tour that takes in Chester's Roman wall (the longest in Britain), the Grosvenor Museum, and the city's medieval streets.
