About Stockwood Discovery Centre and Park Gardens
Stockwood Discovery Centre sits within Stockwood Park on the southern edge of Luton and brings together a free museum, a series of themed gardens, and the grounds of a former country estate. The centre tells the story of Luton and the wider Bedfordshire landscape, from local geology and rural crafts to the town's famous hat-making industry, with hands-on displays that suit families and casual visitors as well as those with a deeper interest in local history.
The grounds contain the Mossman Collection, the largest collection of horse-drawn vehicles on display in the UK, ranging from heavy farm wagons to elegant carriages and a reconstructed Roman chariot. Outside, a sequence of period gardens leads visitors through medieval, Tudor, Victorian and 1930s planting styles, alongside a sensory garden and a walled garden used for events and outdoor sculpture.
Beyond the formal areas, Stockwood Park itself offers open parkland, woodland walks and a children's play area, making it a useful half-day stop reachable by bus from Luton town centre and railway station. There is a cafe on site and free parking, which makes the centre popular with local families and visitors arriving via nearby Luton Airport Parkway.
