St Mary the Virgin, Saffron Walden

St Mary the Virgin is one of Essex's finest parish churches, its striking flint tower and needle-sharp spire visible for miles across the surrounding countryside. The church has developed over several centuries, with the oldest fabric dating from the late 13th century, but it was substantially enlarged during the 14th and 15th centuries when the prosperous saffron trade funded ambitious building campaigns. The result is a church of considerable space and light, with a clerestory gallery and soaring vertical lines that speak to the wealth and ambitions of the medieval congregation.

Inside, the church contains exceptional woodwork, including an ornate screen separating the nave from the chancel, carved roof bosses, and misericords depicting scenes from daily life and folklore. The building also features fine examples of Renaissance monuments and brasses from the 16th and 17th centuries, recording the local worthies of Saffron Walden's golden age. The church remains a working parish church and a key focal point of the town, its spire providing one of Essex's most distinctive landmarks.
