About this attraction

About American Air Museum

The American Air Museum occupies a striking modern building within the Imperial War Museum Duxford site, its design intentionally contemporary in contrast to the historic airfield and preservation hangars surrounding it. The museum is dedicated to telling the story of the United States Army Air Forces' presence and operations in Britain from 1942 until 1945, a crucial period when American aircraft and crews operated from British airfields in the strategic bombing campaign against Nazi Germany and in support of the European war effort.

The collection includes American fighter aircraft such as the P-47 Thunderbolt and P-51 Mustang, alongside bombers and transport planes that carried American airmen to the skies above occupied Europe. Beyond the machines themselves, the museum emphasises the human experience of American airmen in Britain, exploring the relationships formed between Americans and British civilians, the dangers of long-range bombing missions and the technology and tactics that shaped the air war. Visitor experiences include cockpit tours and interactive displays that bring the story to life, making the museum particularly engaging for those with an interest in military aviation history or the American role in the Second World War. The museum is easily accessed alongside other attractions within the larger Duxford complex.
