About Rye

Rye is a gem of English medieval townscapes, perched on a high hill overlooking Romney Marsh and the Kent-Sussex border. The entire town is essentially a preservation of 15th to 18th century building stock arranged around steep cobbled streets within the remains of its medieval defensive walls. Key features include 19th century Georgian townhouses alongside medieval timber frames, a substantial parish church, and distinctive local architecture that commands views across the flat marshland towards the sea and the Wealden highlands.

Originally founded as one of the Cinque Ports confederation, Rye thrived as a maritime trading centre until sediment deposition left it 'in land' from the sea by the 16th century. Rather than decline, it reinvented itself as a market centre and agricultural hub, and later as an artistic and literary destination. The town has long attracted writers, painters, and craftspeople; the author E.F. Benson set his Mapp and Lucia novels here, and the town inspired the footsteps of countless artists drawn to its architectural character and sweeping vistas.

Visitors navigate steep streets linking distinct quarters: the residential heights around Church Square, the commercial heart around the High Street, and the harbourside quarter where the medieval quay still stands at the junction of the River Rother. Multiple independent galleries, bookshops, tea rooms, and restaurants now occupy historic properties. The town walls can be walked for panoramic views, and the surrounding countryside offers access to Romney Marsh walking routes and the South Coast path network.
