About Old Market Square
The Old Market Square sits at the heart of Leicester's medieval street pattern and has been a place of trade for more than 700 years. A market charter granted in the 13th century established the right to hold a weekly market here, and stalls still trade six days a week, making it one of the oldest and largest outdoor markets in Europe. The square is surrounded by the city's historic Lanes, a network of narrow streets lined with independent shops, bars and cafes.
The market today offers fresh produce, fish, flowers, fabrics and street food, with a covered indoor market hall providing year-round shelter. Architectural highlights around the square include the Victorian Corn Exchange building with its distinctive external staircase, and the bronze statue of the 5th Duke of Rutland that stands at its centre. The Corn Exchange is now a popular pub, and the surrounding terraces fill with outdoor seating in warmer months.
The square is a few minutes' walk from Leicester Cathedral, the King Richard III Visitor Centre and the Highcross shopping district, making it a natural pivot point for exploring the city centre on foot.
