Marton Mere Nature Reserve, Blackpool

Marton Mere Nature Reserve is a 88-hectare wetland sanctuary situated on the eastern edge of Blackpool, a short bus ride from the town centre. The reserve protects an important mosaic of habitats including open water, reed beds, carr woodland, and grassland, making it a vital refuge for breeding birds and overwintering waterfowl. Visitors can explore the site via well-maintained paths and three bird-watching hides positioned to overlook the water and reed beds.

The reserve is particularly notable as a breeding ground for marsh harriers, a species that had vanished from Lancashire in the mid-20th century but has now been restored here. Throughout the year, the site attracts hundreds of bird species; spring and autumn bring migratory warblers and rare waders, whilst winter brings flocks of ducks and geese. The visitor centre provides identification guides and seasonal advice, making Marton Mere accessible to ornithologists and casual nature lovers alike.

Managed by RSPB, the reserve also supports dragonflies, amphibians, and wildflowers, offering a stark contrast to the amusement and development surrounding Blackpool. It serves as an important ecological asset and a reminder of the Lancashire landscape that existed before the town's expansion.
