Highdown Gardens

Highdown Gardens cascade down the north-facing slopes of Highdown Hill and represent a remarkable horticultural achievement. The gardens were created from a working chalk quarry, which has been transformed into a showcase for Mediterranean, exotic, and unusual plants that thrive on the free-draining chalk soil. Visitors can expect to see vibrant collections of cistus, salvias, agapanthus, and tender perennials alongside native downland flora.

The steeply sloping terrain offers constant changes of view and walking experience, with winding paths connecting the various planting areas and seating spots. The site includes a tea room and plant sales, and is particularly stunning in summer when the Mediterranean plantings are in full flower.
