Dover Western Heights

Dover Western Heights is a sprawling Victorian-era fortification overlooking the Dover coast, built in the mid-19th century to protect the port from French invasion. The site comprises two main forts connected by a deep dry moat, now a dramatic landscape feature that cuts across the chalk hillside. You can explore a network of military tunnels, gun emplacements, and barracks that have been partly restored and are open to guided tours.

The Heights offer commanding views across the Channel and down to Dover Harbour and the famous White Cliffs. On a clear day, you can see the French coast. The site is significant as one of Britain's most ambitious pre-dreadnought coastal defences and survives as a well-preserved example of Victorian military engineering. The tunnels and fortifications have been used for everything from military operations to civilian shelters during the Second World War. Much of the landscape retains its original structure, making it a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts and walkers alike.
