About this walk
This gentle 2.6 km circuit loops around the edge of the Dunstable Downs and the neighbouring Whipsnade Estate, packing broad Chiltern views and quiet woodland into just three-quarters of an hour. Despite the modest distance, there is a steady 114 m of ascent, so expect one proper pull uphill before the ground eases off again.
The route climbs to Bison Hill, named for its outlook over the wildlife park below, where on clear days the patchwork of Bedfordshire farmland rolls out beneath the escarpment. From here the path drops into Chute Wood, a shaded stretch of mixed trees that offers a cool contrast to the open downland above.
Back near the start you are well placed to linger at the Dunstable Downs viewpoint, pay respects at the Robertson Corner Memorial, or wander into Sallowspring Wood. The National Trust Cafe and the Penguin Kiosk are both on hand for a drink or a bite before you head home.
