About this walk
Starting and finishing in the canalside village of Marsworth, this short circular walk in the Chilterns foothills of Buckinghamshire threads together water, wildlife and a welcome pause for refreshments. The route sets off past The Grand Junction Arms, a traditional canal pub, before following waterside paths linked to the Grand Union Canal and its Wendover Arm.
From the towpath the trail climbs gently towards College Lake, a former chalk quarry now reborn as a nature reserve. The College Lake Cafe makes a natural halfway stop, with big windows over the water and a chance to rest before exploring the on-site Wildlife Garden, a small planted haven designed to attract pollinators and songbirds.
The return leg loops back through quiet field edges towards Marsworth, with occasional views across the reservoirs and the surrounding Buckinghamshire countryside. At just over 3 km with modest ascent, it is an easy hour on foot, and can be easily extended by continuing along the canal towards Bulbourne if you fancy a longer wander.
