About this walk

This linear walk of around 3.5 km links two of the Chilterns' most distinctive open spaces, beginning in the village of Whipsnade and finishing high on the escarpment of Dunstable Downs. Starting near Old Hunters Lodge, the route heads to the Whipsnade Tree Cathedral, a peaceful arrangement of trees and glades planted in the shape of a cathedral floor plan.

From the Tree Cathedral, the path climbs gently onto Bison Hill, which offers wide views over the Vale of Aylesbury. A shaded section through Chute Wood leads out onto the chalk grassland of Dunstable Downs, where the ground opens up to sweeping panoramas across Bedfordshire and beyond.

With only around 107 m of ascent spread across the route, it is an easy hour's walking suited to most abilities. Nearby, walkers can also seek out the Robertson Corner Memorial, the Sir Peter Chalmers Mitchell Memorial and the striking Lubetkin Elephant House, while Landpark Wood and Sallowspring Wood offer quieter detours into the surrounding countryside.
