Watlington Hill Short Walk, Watlington Hill

This short circular walk begins in the market town of Watlington, tucked beneath the western scarp of the Chilterns in south Oxfordshire. Leaving the town behind, the route climbs steadily onto the open downland of Watlington Hill, gaining around 144 metres over its two-mile loop.

On the way up you pass the Watlington White Mark, a distinctive chalk figure cut into the hillside and clearly visible from the town below. Continuing onto the crown of Watlington Hill, the path opens out across grassy slopes and juniper-dotted chalk grassland, with sweeping views west over the Oxfordshire plain towards the Cotswolds on a clear day.

The return leg drops back down the scarp to rejoin Watlington, completing the circuit in around an hour. Despite its modest length, the ascent is steady rather than gentle, and the mix of chalk downland, woodland edges and long views packs a surprising amount into a short outing.
