About this walk

This short linear walk of just over two miles traces a gentle path through the quiet Hampshire countryside around Burghclere, a village long associated with the artist Stanley Spencer. With only around 52 metres of ascent spread across 45 minutes of walking, it is an easy outing suited to almost anyone with a spare afternoon.

The route passes the Church of the Ascension in Burghclere and rolls on through a landscape of hedgerows and small woodland pockets, with Hastridge Copse and Gosling's Copse lying close by. Field-edge paths and quiet lanes give a real sense of the rural setting that shaped Spencer's memorial paintings, and there are open views across the fields as you go.

The walk ends near the Carpenters Arms, a welcome spot to pause at the finish. As a linear route, it works well combined with a return along the same path, or planned around local transport for a one-way stroll.
