About this walk
Starting from the Gibside Stables, this compact circuit heads out across the estate towards one of its most eye-catching Georgian follies, the Banqueting House, perched to enjoy views across the Derwent valley. The path rolls gently through parkland and mature woodland, giving you a taste of Gibside's grand landscape design without straying too far from the main courtyard.
From the Banqueting House the trail drops into Snipes Dene, a steep-sided wooded valley that feels a world away from the open lawns above. Expect a mix of shade, birdsong and a modest climb back out, which accounts for most of the 143 m of ascent packed into just under 3 km.
Looping back towards the Stables, keep an eye out for glimpses of other estate landmarks such as the Column of Liberty rising above the treetops, and the ruins of Gibside Hall. It's an easy hour on foot, but one that showcases the valley views, follies and woodland that give the estate its character.
