About this walk
This linear stretch of the Usk Valley Walk threads through the gentle Monmouthshire countryside between Llanfoist Fawr, on the outskirts of Abergavenny, and Gobion Fawr further down the valley. At around 8.7 km with only 55 metres of ascent, it offers an easy-going half-day of riverside and pastoral walking without the demands of the nearby Black Mountains.
From the start at Llanfoist Fawr, the route heads south through Llanellen before rolling on towards the churches at Llanover, St Cadoc and Saint Michael, each a quiet marker along the way. Fields, hedgerows and stretches close to the River Usk shape the character of the walk, with views opening across the valley towards The Bryn and the wooded ridges beyond.
Along the way you pass near Nant Rhyd-y-meirch, with Llangattock Nigh Usk and Llanvihangel Gobion sitting just off the line of the route. The walk finishes at Gobion Fawr, roughly two hours from the start at a steady pace, leaving time to explore the surrounding hamlets or continue along further sections of the Usk Valley Walk.
