About this walk
This easy 3.2 km loop links the neighbouring villages of Storth and Sandside on the western edge of Cumbria, close to the Kent Estuary. Starting from Storth, the route drops down towards Sandside, where the path passes the well-preserved Sandside Quarry Lime Kilns, a reminder of the area's industrial past when limestone was burned here for use across the region.
From the kilns the walk follows quiet lanes and footpaths through Sandside before climbing gently back towards Storth. The modest 84 m of ascent is spread evenly across the loop, and on clear days there are open views across the estuary and the low limestone hills that characterise this corner of south Cumbria.
Burntbarrow Plantation lies a short distance away and makes a worthwhile extension for those wanting more time among the trees. The whole circuit takes around 45 minutes at a steady pace, making it an ideal short outing or a gentle leg-stretch when travelling through the area.
