About this walk

This linear walk of just over four kilometres links the chalk heights of Dunstable Downs with the wooded slopes of the Whipsnade Estate, climbing steadily through some of Central Bedfordshire's most open countryside. Starting at Totternhoe on the western edge of Dunstable Downs, the route sets off across grassland with far-reaching views over the Vale of Aylesbury.

The path rises across the exposed chalk downland, with more than 200 metres of ascent spread over the route, before descending gently into the sheltered landscape of the Whipsnade Estate. Expect a mix of open ridge walking and enclosed field paths, with skylarks overhead in summer and buzzards riding the thermals along the escarpment.

At around 4.2 kilometres and roughly an hour and a quarter at a steady pace, it makes a satisfying half-day outing. As a linear route, you'll need to plan a return by bus or arrange a pick-up at the far end rather than looping back to Totternhoe.
