About this walk
This short circular walk begins at Souter Lighthouse, the striking red and white tower that stands watch over the cliffs of the South Tyneside coast. From here the path traces the clifftop northwards, opening up wide views across the North Sea and down to the rocky shore below.
The route soon enters Whitburn Point Local Nature Reserve, a pocket of grassland and scrub that draws seabirds and wildflowers in season. Continuing round, you pass The Wherry before looping back inland across gentle grazing land. The Lighthouse Cafe at Souter makes a natural finish for tea and cake, and there are further curiosities nearby including the Marsden Lime Kilns and the Lighthouse Christian Fellowship.
At just 2.5 km with modest ascent, it is an easy outing suitable for most walkers, and the compact loop makes it ideal for pairing with a longer day exploring the wider Marsden and Whitburn coast.
