Souter Lighthouse Ranger Run, Souter Lighthouse

This short circular route sets off from Souter Lighthouse on the South Tyneside coast, an easy half-hour loop that packs in clifftop views, coastal grassland and a distinctive red-and-white striped landmark. The lighthouse itself is the obvious starting point, standing above the cliffs at Marsden and visible for miles along this stretch of the Tyne and Wear shoreline.

From the lighthouse the path heads inland briefly, passing the Lighthouse Christian Fellowship before threading into Whitburn Point Local Nature Reserve. This coastal reserve is a good spot to slow down for a moment, with rough grassland and sea views that draw plenty of birdlife. The route then loops back towards the coast, dropping past The Wherry before returning to the lighthouse car park.

With only 65 metres of ascent spread across a little over two kilometres, it is a genuinely easy outing, well suited to families or anyone wanting a quick leg-stretch by the sea. If you have longer, the Marsden Lime Kilns nearby make an interesting add-on and tie the walk in with the industrial heritage of this part of the North East coast.
