About this walk

The Shutlingsloe Walk is a short but rewarding linear route of 3.7 km in Cheshire East, climbing 214 m to one of the most distinctive summits in the county. Often nicknamed the "Cheshire Matterhorn" for its shapely profile, Shutlingsloe rewards the steady effort of the ascent with sweeping views across the Peak District's western moors and the Cheshire Plain beyond.

The route passes Walter Smith and crosses the open ground of Nessit Hill before descending towards the finish at Langley, a small village tucked into the hills east of Macclesfield. Along the way there is a real sense of transition, from high heather and gritstone tops down into pastured valleys threaded with drystone walls.

Nearby, Ridgegate Reservoir sits quietly in the wooded fold below, and Bolin Brook drains the surrounding slopes, offering pleasant add-on wandering if you have time at either end. At around an hour and a quarter of walking, this is a moderate outing that packs a lot of landscape into a compact distance.
