About this walk
The River Anton Way offers a gentle linear stroll through the chalk-stream landscape of the Test Valley in Hampshire. Beginning at Testcombe, the path follows the clear waters of the Anton as it winds towards its confluence with the River Test, passing meadows, hedgerows and quiet riverside pasture typical of this part of the county.
Continuing through the hamlet of Fullerton, walkers pass close to the course of the abandoned Andover Canal, whose old line still traces the valley floor. The route skirts nearby features such as Golden Pond and the wooded slopes of West Down, with Hatton Hill and Central Wood rising to provide a green backdrop away from the water.
The walk finishes in the pretty village of Wherwell, known for its thatched cottages and timber-framed houses set beside the Test. At 2.6 km with only modest ascent, it makes a relaxed half-day outing, easily combined with a longer riverside itinerary or a pause at one of the village's traditional pubs.
