Pulpit Hill Fort and Nature Reserves Circular Walk, Central Chilterns

This compact circular loop begins in the village of Askett and climbs steadily into the wooded scarp of the Central Chilterns, packing a surprising amount of ascent into under two miles. From the village the route heads up towards Grangelands and The Rifle Range, a chalk grassland nature reserve managed for its wildflowers and butterflies, before entering the beech woodland of Pulpit Hill Nature Reserve.

The high point is Pulpit Hill itself, crowned by the earthworks of an Iron Age hillfort concealed among the trees. From here the path descends through the reserves and back down the scarp, returning to Askett to close the loop. Views open out across the Vale of Aylesbury where the woodland breaks.

Nearby, walkers can extend their day by exploring Maple Wood, Great Kimble Warren or the aptly named Happy Valley, all typical of this quiet corner of the Chilterns AONB. Despite its short distance, the sustained climb and woodland footing make this a walk best tackled at an unhurried pace.
