About this walk

This short deviation from the Pennine Way delivers you into Kirk Yetholm along the final stretch of the long-distance trail, tracing the Halter Burn valley through the quiet Scottish Borders countryside. Starting near Schilgreen, the path drops gently past the ruins and farmsteads of Old Halterburnhead and Burnhead, following the burn as it winds between rounded, grassy hills.

The going is easy underfoot, with just over 120 metres of ascent spread across 5.5 kilometres. As you pass Halterburn, the valley broadens and the rooftops of Kirk Yetholm come into view. Look out for Shiel Knowe and Black Hag rising to the south, while Shielknowe Burn and Dryslack Burn feed into the main watercourse alongside the track.

The Halfwayhouse site is a familiar marker for Pennine Way walkers approaching the end of their journey. Finishing on the village green at Kirk Yetholm, this is a gentle, scenic way to sample the closing miles of one of Britain's great trails without committing to the full route.
