About this walk
The Park End Moss Wetland Walk is a compact circular route through the Sizergh estate on the southern edge of the Lake District. Covering 3.5 km with around 161 m of ascent, it packs a surprising amount of variety into an hour on foot, mixing low-lying wetland with gentler rises that open up views across the Kent valley.
The walk loops through Park End Moss itself, a quiet pocket of restored wetland habitat, before climbing onto firmer ground where the path threads between woodland edges and pasture. The going is moderate rather than strenuous, but the short ascent gives a real sense of leaving the valley floor behind. Nearby Helsington, with its open fells and limestone scenery, lies just to the north and makes a natural extension for those wanting to walk further.
Expect a mixture of underfoot conditions, with damp, soft sections through the moss and drier tracks on the higher ground. It is a good choice for a half-day outing from Kendal, easily reached without a car and rewarding in any weather, though the wetland is at its most atmospheric when the light is low.
