Ouzel Meander

Starting and finishing at Rushmere, this 6.7 km circular traces the meandering course of the River Ouzel through a quiet corner of Central Bedfordshire. The route sets out past the Globe Inn before dropping down to Ouzel Meadows, where the river winds slowly between grassy banks and offers the first long views across open pasture.

From the meadows the path loops back through wooded fringes on the edge of Rushmere, with a modest 140 m of ascent spread across gentle rises rather than any sharp climbs. Expect a mix of riverside paths, field edges and shaded tracks, with the Ouzel itself never far from earshot as it flows on towards the Grand Union corridor.

Allow around one hour and forty-five minutes at a steady pace. Nearby Knolls Wood, Bluebell Wood and Linslade Wood are all worth a detour if you have time to extend the day, and The Star and The Stag provide further options for a post-walk drink alongside the Globe Inn.
