About this walk

This challenging linear stretch of the Oldham Way climbs onto the high moorland fringe of Greater Manchester, offering wide views across the South Pennines for those willing to put in the ascent. Over 10.8 km the route gains some 614 m, so steady legs and decent boots are essential.

The path makes its way up to Pots and Pans Hill, a well-known gritstone outcrop with sweeping panoramas, before continuing along the open moor past the Pots and Pans landmark itself. Nearby summits including Alderman's Hill and Dick Hill rise on the skyline, framing a landscape of heather, rough pasture and weathered rock that feels far removed from the town below.

Allow around three and a half hours to complete the walk at a comfortable pace, with time to pause on the tops and take in the views. As a linear route, it is well suited to those travelling by bus or train, with onward transport links making it easy to return without retracing your steps.
