About this walk

The Mosses Trail Green is a gentle circular waymarked route across Whixall Moss, one of the great lowland raised bogs on the Shropshire and Welsh border. At just 2.3 km with barely any ascent, it offers a relaxed half-hour taste of a landscape unlike anywhere else in the county, all wide skies, russet sphagnum and dark peat cuttings.

From the start the trail heads out across the open moss, passing the Charles Sinker Fields, an area of restored bog named in recognition of conservation work here. A short detour brings you to the Mammoth Tower, a raised viewing point that lifts you above the reeds for a sweeping look across the peatland. Along the way you can also seek out Oaf's Orchard and the Inclinometer, small features that add character to the walk.

The path then loops quietly back to the start over level ground. It is an ideal introduction to the mosses for families, casual walkers or anyone with limited time, and pairs well with longer trails from the same trailhead.
