Mini Explorer Trail and Brass Rubbing, Hardy Monument

This short circular walk from the Hardy Monument is a gentle introduction to the high downs above Portesham, ideal for families and anyone with just half an hour to spare. The monument itself, a tall stone tower on Black Down, marks the start and finish and is a landmark visible for miles across south Dorset.

From the tower the trail loops out through open heath and grassland, dipping down to Smitten Corner before curving back to the car park. The going is easy underfoot with only modest ups and downs, and the wide views take in a sweep of the Dorset countryside and, on clear days, the coast beyond. The Mini Explorer waymarks help younger walkers follow the route, and a brass rubbing element adds a small activity along the way.

At 2 km with around 74 metres of ascent, it is a quick leg-stretch rather than a serious outing, but the setting on the ridge gives it a big-country feel out of all proportion to its length.
