About this walk

The Mill Walk follows a riverside line through Hardcastle Crags, a wooded valley in the South Pennines just north of Hebden Bridge. At 2.3 km one way, with a stiff 216 m of ascent gathered along the route, it is a short but moderately demanding outing that trades level riverside paths for steeper climbs through the trees.

The route threads through classic Calder Valley woodland, with the river running close by for much of the way and glimpses out to the surrounding moorland edges. Within easy reach of the walk lie several local landmarks worth combining into a longer day: the Smeekin Hill War Memorial on the higher ground above, the gritstone outcrop of Willow Rock, and the Slack Bottom Standing Stone on the moor fringe.

As a linear walk you will need to retrace your steps or arrange onward transport from the far end. Allow around an hour at a steady pace, more if you want to linger by the water or detour to take in the nearby viewpoints.
