About this walk
This short but rewarding linear walk climbs from the quiet village of Melbury Abbas up onto the open chalk grassland of Fontmell and Melbury Downs, a stretch of the North Dorset Downs cared for by the National Trust. The ascent is steady rather than gentle, gaining around 157 metres in roughly two miles, so expect to work for the views.
From Melbury Abbas the path rises towards Melbury Hill, where the summit of Melbury Beacon opens up sweeping panoramas across the Blackmore Vale and out towards Cranborne Chase. The route then follows the ridge along Compton Down, with skylarks overhead in summer and butterflies flitting through the wildflower turf, before dropping gently down to finish at Compton Abbas.
At around an hour of walking, this is an ideal half-day outing from Shaftesbury. Being a linear route, you will need to plan a return by bus, taxi or a pre-positioned second car, or simply retrace your steps for a there-and-back walk of roughly four miles.
