Marsden Deer Hill Walk, Marsden Moor

This circular walk on Marsden Moor climbs above the village to explore the open moorland edge on the fringe of the Peak District. Starting near St Bartholomew's church in Marsden, the route heads out towards Mill Dam and gains height steadily, rewarding the effort with sweeping views across the surrounding reservoirs and gritstone edges.

As you follow the paths across Deer Hill, look out for Butterley Reservoir tucked in the valley below and the craggy outline of Shooters Nab to the south. The way passes close to Gate Head and skirts patches of woodland before opening onto the wilder expanses of Binn Moor, where heather, cotton grass and skylarks are typical companions in the warmer months.

At around 6.7 km with 281 m of ascent, this is a moderate half-day outing that packs in a real sense of the South Pennine landscape. The return leg drops back towards Marsden, where the railway station makes it an easy car-free day out from Huddersfield or Manchester.
